The European digital ecosystem is not starting from zero. A wide range of European-developed platforms, services, and tools already exists — spanning communications, productivity, infrastructure, and consumer-facing applications.
The list below is not exhaustive, and it is not intended to replace or compete with existing directories. In particular, we recognize and support the European Alternatives initiative, which curates a regularly updated and community-driven directory of European digital services. Our aim here is simply to illustrate the diversity and potential of the ecosystem, and to demonstrate that alternatives already exist across many domains.
Examples of existing European digital services include:
- Email Services: ProtonMail, Tutanota, Mailfence
- Social Media & Federated Platforms: Mastodon, Pixelfed, Diaspora
- Video Sharing: PeerTube, Dailymotion
- Cloud Storage & Collaboration: Nextcloud, Tresorit, pCloud
- Search Engines: Qwant, Ecosia
- AI and LLMs: Mistral AI, Aleph Alpha
- Business Cloud & Hosting: OVHcloud, Scaleway, City Network
- E-commerce: Zalando, Bol.com, Allegro
- Office & Productivity: OnlyOffice, Collabora Online
- Financial Services: Revolut, N26, Wise, SEPA, P27, European CBDC initiatives
- Cybersecurity: F-Secure, ESET, Avast, Sophos
- Communication Tools: Element (Matrix), Threema, Wire, Jami
- Data Analytics & Big Data: SAP, Dataiku
- Transportation & Mobility: BlaBlaCar, Bolt
- Media & Streaming: Deezer, Spotify, MUBI, Viaplay
This landscape shows the breadth of initiatives already underway. Many of these platforms operate independently, but together they provide a promising base for a more coordinated, resilient, and values-driven European digital future.
Further development, integration, and institutional support are needed — but the foundations are clearly present. The next step is to recognize these assets and build upon them through collective action.
